The Hidden Cost of Over-Planning

If there’s one thing nurse practitioners are known for, it’s preparation.

We train hard. We study every detail. We care deeply about getting it right.

And while those qualities make you an exceptional clinician, they can quietly sabotage your growth as a leader or entrepreneur.

I’ve seen it over and over: Talented NPs with powerful ideas who spend months—sometimes years—stuck in planning mode.

Here’s why this happens:

  • You believe you need a perfect plan before you start.

  • You worry that if you make a mistake, it will define you.

  • You tell yourself you’ll move forward after you get one more credential.

It feels safer to over-prepare. But it’s actually one of the most expensive decisions you can make.

The cost of over-planning is time you’ll never get back. It’s patients you’ll never serve on your terms. It’s opportunities that pass you by while you’re perfecting the draft.

So what’s the alternative? Micro-leaps.

Small, strategic actions that move you forward without requiring the entire roadmap.

When I look back on my own journey—from clinician to business owner to mentor—I didn’t have everything figured out.

I just committed to taking the next small step:

  • Signing up for a workshop.

  • Joining a committee.

  • Saying yes to a speaking engagement I felt unqualified for.

Every time you take action, you shrink the fear and build the confidence that no plan can give you.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s my challenge to you: Stop perfecting the plan and start moving.

Your first micro-leap is enough to build momentum.

What’s the one thing you could do this week—even if it feels small?

That’s where everything begins.
